A male American bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) looks very dapper in breeding plumage. Normally bitterns are subdued looking and blend in to the surrounding grasses. But during the breeding season, his fluffy, white epaulets are very showy. His behavior changes as well, being less concerned with hiding and more interesting in strutting. The American bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) is a wading bird in the heron family. It breeds in central USA and Canada; migrates to the south for the winter.
